Whats the best external hard video card to get for gaming?

If you're talking about external video/graphics card for laptops, that's a different story. Earlier posters have already explained that cheap USB-based external adapters are worthless for gaming because of the low bandwidth. However, there IS one device currently available that actually works for gaming on laptops. It's called the ViDock.



The ViDock lets you connect desktop graphics/video cards to your laptop for greatly improved gaming performance. However, it only works with an external monitor (not the laptop's built-in screen) and only laptops with an Expresscard slot are compatible. Many low-end to medium level laptops don't have that slot.



The ViDock approach also isn't cheap. Your total cost would include the ViDock unit itself, plus a desktop card (ranging anywhere from $70 for a Radeon HD 5670/GeForce GT 440 to $200 for a Radeon HD 6870/GeForce GTX 560) and if you don't already have one, a monitor too.

However it DOES work. And even the cheapest unit (a Vidock 3) plus a Radeon HD 6670 is far superior to the built-in graphics adapters on many laptops.|||There's really no such thing in existence. There are no external interfaces fast enough to handle the bandwidth needed for a 3d accelerator card to operate. There are usb video interfaces but they don't have 3d acceleration so they are pretty much useless for games.|||they dont make external video cards for PCs, you can get one for a mac that uses thunderbolt for about $500.
